» Former U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez has been named a partner at the international law firm DLA Piper. A lawyer with 25 years of private-practice experience, Martinez, also a former chairman of Orange County, will work in the firm’s government affairs practice and be based in both Tampa and Washington, D.C.

» The Florida Supreme Court ruled that the state must pay Hillsborough Circuit Court Judge Gregory Holder $70,000, part of the $1.8 million he spent successfully defending himself against charges of plagiarism in 1998.

» Retired judges can no longer use the formal title “judge” in advertisements, according to a ruling by the Florida Bar’s committee on advertising. The terms “former judge” or “retired judge” are still acceptable.

» Edith Osman, head of the family law practice group at Carlton Fields, has been named president of the Florida Supreme Court Historical Society.

A crowd cheered and took photos as two loggerhead sea turtles slowly made their way through the sand and into the Atlantic Ocean. Monday's turtle release marked the end of their rehabilitation at the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach, Florida.
